Movie Mania

I have decided I am just going to chronicle my favourite movies and the movies I have to watch. The problem with me is that I like to see movies in a theatre and then when they come on TV - I cannot actively go and rent DVD's/VCD's and watch them at home - it is not the same experience!

So anway, here goes:

  • Speed - All time favourite.......I can see this movie again and again and again. There is something about the bomb on the bus that I find fascinating - it may also have to do with the fact that Keanu Reeves has never looked cuter. Actually, it's funny coz I never saw the movie when it released, and to be cool in school used to write it as my favourite movie and eventually it seriously has become one of my repeat watches!
  • which leads me to Clueless - this movie is my favourite coz I want to be Cher! I mean she has the clothes, she has the house, she has the bargaining skills tho I would rather have my mom than have all that but still...ok I want to be Cher with my parents!
  • How to marry a millionaire - the reason to like this movie is obvious - it is every girl's handbook to life.
  • Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge - the first Hindi movie that made sense to me. They lived reasonably normal lives, went on holiday, wore the clothes more than once - no excessive drama [the fight scene at the extreme end can be overlooked] so yeah the first movie for my generation
  • Dil Chahta Hai - if DDLJ was the first movie for my generation, DCH embodied my generation. That was my life on screen [well I am a girl but u get what I mean], the hanging out, the holidays in Goa, the off beat career options - Its a movie that you identify with. Movies like DCH cross the bridge between Hollywood and Bollywood. At the end of the day, a movie with white people does not reflect 'me' but it is more likely than a QSQT- a movie I can never identify with.
  • Notting Hill - this is a really sweet movie - it's gentle is what I would call it. An ordinary guy falls in love with a movie star but he has no idea what a movie star is - so he really likes the person. It's so hard for her to understand this coz for her as well, her persona is larger than her. A little perspective is all that is need to balance ur life - this is one thing the movie can actually teach u! Nothing seems as dramatic compared to missing a step and never being able to walk again!
  • Bend it like Beckham - Futball, Shutball, Hai Rabba! This movie is just funny - it has its touching moments but overall the way of life of Indians in England is so typically depicted that the movie is hysterical.
  • Sleepers - the movie makes me cry everytime. The sheer waste of childhood, the enduring friendship, the anguished love, the terrible mistake for which they paid with their lives - it's really far removed from my childhood but that makes it all the more poignant and me all the more grateful for the life I've had!
  • Terminator II - Hee Hee! I know I know favourite movie! but as I always say - this is a very emotional film - I mean it teaches a robot how to cry?? how cool is that?
  • I've never actually seen the movie from beginning to end is what I have realised but it definitely qualifies as one of my favourite movies for the song 'My sharona' but it is a really good movie - sometimes I think I could be Winona ryder wandering aimlessly in my life looking for direction when it's staring at me!
  • 2 movies in the same genre [according to me] is 1947 Earth and Mr. and Mrs. Iyer. These are really haunting films - they seem set in Sepia tones but not - it just reflects the colors of the riots and communalism. The lack of color, the lack of thought, the lack of reason, the lack of humanity....
  • I like a lot of Johnny Depp movies also - Piratesof the Caribbean, What's eating Gilbert Grape?, Benny and Joon....he generally does vague yet commercial cinema so guaranteed good watch. Here I have to mention favourit...
  • 'Edward Scissorhands' - What a movie! What a thought!! It also talks about life in Middle America - where everybody wants to know what is going on but is still very accepting if the new one is white. Winona and Johnny, the style, Tim Burton makes strange cinema - I love it!
  • Then there are the classics - Like Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, Breakfast at Tiffany's
  • The Mummy and The Mummy returns - these are just adventure packed, laugh a minute fun movies. The crazy ideas, the history, the mummy himself all tres cool!
  • Crash - this is a slice of life movie I really like - the deep rooted prejudices, the irrational fears, the hopes and desires, the overcoming of it all - I like the sentiment of the movie

So this is pretty much the kind of cinema I like - I've been for only one international film festival in Pune where I saw really good films like Journey up the Sao francisco river [set in Brazil], Together [Chinese movie], Si J'etais Riche but having seen all these movies only once they cant really qualify as favourites. They are just theatre I appreciate which is a list of movies people should see. For eg Clueless is one of my favourites, but it does not necessarily mean you have to see it.

This is gonna be a post I'm going to keep editing as and when I remember more films or decide on a new favourite!

This 'n' that!

U cannot imagine the life I have been having....It has been peaceful to the point of bliss!! For the first time with a lot of good luck, my targets have been achieved so stress free at work - I'm very happy [read secure+content] in my personal space so life has just settled itself out. I'm so scared while writing this coz I believe in 'nazar' but really perhaps this is just the calm after the storm - after all, my life has been crazy hectic for the last couple of years on all fronts.
I know, the new status also requires some pulling and tugging to adjust to it from all angles but I actually like the place I'm in, after years. My job profile will need to change in 6 months to keep my interest, but the place definitely makes me happy in terms of the culture and growth of the company as a whole.
In other news, I have not seen a lot of movies recently since 'people' are very hyper critical of most movies and can't sit for 2 hrs in a cinema. This is true tho - I have difficulty as well espescially in movies like 'Salaam - e - Ishq' which go on forever but I'm willing to sacrifice comfort to see a movie. I think that certain movies like 'Crash' need to be seen at home to fully absorb the nuances in the movie but cinema like ' Transformers' can't be appreciated at all unless in a massive AV conducive environment! So I need to watch 'Jab We Met', think I can skip 'Bhool Bulaiya' - I've also been lucky - shitty movies have been released like 'No Smoking', 'Laaga Chunari Mein Daag' so it's been easy to skip the weekly cineman visits. Tho I think 'Mighty heart' must happen and I know 'Superbad' will!!
I have no major plans fr the coming weekend [4 days coz of Diwali] after having spent a very chilled out previous weekend in Pune doing nothing much except for spending money shopping and eating - two of my favourite activities!! I also think my ex-flat mate now has a current 'flatmate' who she is not accepting in public but more on that later.
This post seems to be rambling in all directions but I'm loving the fact of it and the fact that I have nothing to stress on!

Excuses Excuses

Happiness is a many splendored thing - I know Ive used that very liberally but you get my drift. However the feeling is so all pervasive that it really does not leave you time or inclination for much else. Blogging requires a need to share with the universe - happiness kills that need [for me particularly]. I am so busy sharing with real live people that I can see and touch that I don't feel a particular need to share with an unknown world at large. Possibly I have not reached that stage where cyberworld is so close that it is like real live people to me.

So in my case, I cannot blog when Im unhappy coz its too personal to put on the net and I don't need to blog when I'm happy which effectively means I only blog when I'm in limbo which is also possibly why my blogging is average!!

Ultimate Bourne

So I finally saw Bourne Ultimatum last night. This has really been the most awaited movie, since it released ages ago in the states and took like 6 weeks to get here which is something one is not used to anymore since the worldwide premiere thingy started e.g. Spidey 3, Casino Royale etc. All in All, it bes quite a nice film, wraps up all the ends neatly enough. Personally, I think Matt Damon [though a hottie!!] looks too young to play Jason Bourne - I think in the books, he was slightly older. Also, I think in the second book, he gets married and has kids, and what happened to the Carlos character? As Gamous put it, in this film, there was google, and the European union [since he moves from country to country with no issue], in the book, there was no cell phones!! I don't understand what Julia Stiles was doing in the movie tho...the movie did not need a romantic interest - it's gripping enough with the story line and the constant action. [ My recommendation - don't watch it in the Dome - I saw it in a large enough theatre and still felt nauseous!!]
Next film on my agenda, is Loins of Punjab which is supposed to be hysterically funny. But let's face it, the film I'm really looking forward to is 'Om Shanti Om'.....'Main Hoon Na' ranks as one of my nice films and this one looks kitschy as well - I mean there is a song 'Dard-e-Disco'!! Analysis of which has landed us at the conclusion that the song means there is a disco of pain in his heart - go figure!!

1. Buffy the Vampire slayer - each generation a slayer is chosen - she is living on the Hell mouth - she is in love with the most gorgeous man alive who happens to be dead for the last 243 year - a vampire with a soul - she kicks butt with her entourage - a witch, a werewolf, a demon and a general loser!!

2. Roswell - aliens crash landed - left their spawn with super talents - who can fall in love with humans but have to mate with their own kind since they are the rulers of their universe - have enemies chasing after them and the story continues....

3. Grey's Anatomy - McDreamy, McSteamy, doctors, emergency situations, life saving options, who can resist all the drama? and mostly a soundtrack to die for, all my current favourite songs are from the show - Chasing cars, How to save a life, Breathe...possibly they my favourite coz they featuring on the show but what the hell??

4. The O.C - oh to have lives like that!! U wear fancy clothes, go to fancy shcools, have all these cute boys living next door....sob sob!! oh and ur mother sleeps with your ex boy friend, ur sister runs away from school, ur boyfriend beats up people for no reason.....wowie!

5. One Tree Hill - I only saw one season of this but seemed very exciting - half brothers living in the same town - father won't accept one - the brother wont accept the other - falling in love with each other's best friends - my god the saga continues!!

6. Friends - a group of 6 who seem to have really odd work timings, can sit and drink endless cups of coffee - seem to fall in love within the group all the time without major drama - and can you make you laugh no matter the number of times you see it!!

7. Beverly Hills 90210 - the original teen angst drama - the rest are all copies. Country hicks move to the cool zip code and change their lives around. Good friends, great clothes and the original soap is born!

8. Charmed - a show about 3 witches - the power of whom combined is the most potent force in the universe - they have an enemy called the source - the source of all evil of course!!

9. Wonder years - who did not want to adopt Fred Savage I tell you? and which boy did not have a crush on Winnie Cooper!! The original show about the 60's which deals with the war, and how terrible growing up can be!!

Face it! Facebook is here!

Last year at around this time - a little earlier in the year perhaps- I had blogged about how orkut was the new obsession amongst my friends - it was in effect a new avenue of communication that had opened up that was not as personal as a phone call or an email...so it let you keep in touch with the more random people amongst your circle of acquaintances/extended friends etc.
This year, THE social networking site is facebook and I know this for a fact coz my extremely Internet unfriendly best friend is actually on the site and working it thrice a week. I have to agree tho - the site totally rocks - I think it's ok for the staying in touch bit [Orkut is better for the sheer simplicity of the platform..] but there are the various 'applications' you can add which are like just fun. It has the original pacman game [Now I wanna go play that!!], it has this weird funda of zombies/vampires/werewolves [since I'm so Buffy obsessed - I love these!!] where you get to bite people and 'turn' them and the more people you turn, the higher you go in the levels [please note, I am currently a Bishop in the house of Zombie - I willingly add people to my friend's list thinking of them as potential minions in my army......muahahahahahah(**evil laugh**type thingy - sowwy)!!].
In addition to these, there are the quizzes which are ok, the superlatives and nicknames apps which I just love....case in point....I just[ as I type] nicknamed Best friend Bad girl - go ask her why!! Superlatives has these crazy options like person most likely to turn to Wikipedia to answer life's questions and I know a person like that - go figure!! For some reason tho, everyone seems to have nominated me to have a blonde moment....I mean really now! I just can't figure out why?? ;-)!!
Let me not forget to mention the poke pro/superpoke/xme options where people can throw sheep at each other [this is definitely for the kiwi population on facebook - ask R & R, they can tell you!!], bite, hug, kiss etc. My personal options is to defenestrate someone [Don't know what that means - wiki it!!] However I have also been l33t haxxored - when I figure that one out - will let you know!! It's cute and there are variations of it like fight club where you get to do only nasty things - so basically my point of the whole thing is that Fb is 'funner' since it has more interactions possible which make it really addictive. I mean for God's sake, while I'm blogging, I'm logged on!!
